5 Myths About Orthodontic Treatment

Posted on

Orthodontic treatment is useful for anyone who is not happy with the alignment of their teeth. Through extractions, braces and retainers, orthodontists can change the positions of teeth to make your smile straighter and more regular. Unfortunately, many people believe myths that prevent them from making the most of the treatments that are on offer.

1. Myth: You're Too Old to Straighten Your Smile

Although the most common time in life to have orthodontic treatment is during adolescence, there is no age limit. Wearing braces or a retainer during adulthood can have a significant impact on the alignment of your teeth. In fact, nearly a third of orthodontic patients are over the age of 20. Whether you missed out on braces as a teen, or you had orthodontic treatment that was not entirely successful, it's not too late to straighten your smile.

2. Myth: Orthodontic Treatment Is Unaffordable

While orthodontic treatment can be expensive, many dentists offer financing programs that allow you to spread the cost over several months or years. Public health initiatives also allow children in low-income families to receive free orthodontic care. As well-aligned teeth are easier to clean and less likely to cause injury to your cheek lining or tongue, you could save money on dental care in the long run.

3. Myth: Braces Are Unattractive

If your only image of orthodontic treatment is unattractive metal wires that spoil an otherwise beautiful smile, it's time to think again. Today, many orthodontists offer custom braces, which allow you to choose the colours of the elastics to suit your personal style. Depending on your condition, you might also be able to opt for invisible braces, which are clear plastic retainers that are almost entirely unnoticeable.

4. Myth: Orthodontic Treatment Hurts

The process of having braces fitted should not hurt. Nor should your braces cause you pain on a daily basis, although it is normal to feel them exerting a slight pressure on your teeth. If your braces are painful, be sure to let your dentist know. It should be possible to adjust them so that you feel more comfortable.

5. Myth: The Results Don't Last

Orthodontic treatment can produce results that last a lifetime. To ensure that your treatment is successful, your dentist will provide you with a retainer to wear after your fixed braces are removed. Be sure to wear this retainer according to your dentist's instructions.
